Bernard Hopkins Throws Down The Challenge For A Trilogy – Roy Jones jr responds “We can do it anytime, anywhere, any day
BY Scottie “The Context” White
Boxing is known to deliver surprises, especially when its big names involved inciting the media headlines. The news is that two legends may face-off again past their competitive promise. In wake of the news which didn’t spark up a wild fire but reignited a candle light to remind us what happens when two rivals, are one-and-one and somehow it still leaves an acerbic taste to consummate any doubt by lacing up for one last hooray.
When Roy Jones jr (66-9 47KOs) challenged Bernard Hopkins (55-8 42KOs) in their first outing reflecting back 5/1993 for the vacant International Boxing Federation (IBF) World Middleweight title. Jones jr was victorious via unanimous decision which would badge him the crown for bragging right for several years. The rematch to run it back would fruition just short of 17 years betwixt Jones jr and Hopkins – who would avenge their first bout resulting in a unanimous decision victory 4/2010 to level the score one apiece.
If we’re going to register a running tally up to now, well Jones jr last win was in 2018 vice Hopkins calendared back in 2014. A disparity that is minuscule in comparison if we’re revisiting the window of when both were in their respectable prime, a considerable youth to compete while in possession of lethal technical authority from both sides.
Recently, Hopkins lens-the-moments to issue a verbal challenge from one legend-to-another.
“The point is this, we are 1 and 1, you got one, I have one. let’s break the tie.We can go to Russia, we can go to China, or we can go anywhere in Europe to fight. Let’s do it! Hey Roy, hopefully you get this video. Because I don’t want to get lost in the clouds somewhere,” Hopkins stated.
My initial reaction was not if Jones jr would respond but when? The multi time champion Jones jr upholstered and returned fire reminiscence of his blistering counter attacks he was known for in his heyday –
“We can do it anytime, anywhere any day. You know me, I don’t play, I stay ready. I’ve been waiting for an opportunity to do something like this anyway,” Jones responded.
“Let me know which weight so I can get down, because I’m up. I know I’m bigger than he is. Tell me which weight so I can start heading in that direction,” Jones added.
A positive monocular view for those who are already amped up to witness a potential trilogy, is first; to allow it to buoy on the surface long enough for an official presser and then let the mutual trash talking benefactors, commence the build up to a final stance for all the bragging rights. What isn’t a question is their physical aesthetics as both seemed to visually be in decent shape but on the flip-side there has to be a fight camp long enough to re-calibrate that boxing fluidity.
Furthermore, it’s said to only be a four-round clash at this point. I’m hoping maybe six, due to both fighters boxing IQ sustaining many tricks to the trade to execute an intelligent fight strategy to earn a decision victory.
